As Jesse flees Annville, he is forced to rely on Tulip O'Hare, a human sharpshooter and his childhood sweetheart who was previously estranged from him. Their journey takes them to New Orleans, where they meet Cassidy, an Irish vampire with a penchant for whiskey and violence, who has been seeking a way out of his immortality. Together, this trio embarks on a road trip across the American South and beyond, evading law enforcement and the terrifying Saint of Killers while Jesse struggles with the moral weight of his new god-like power and the terrifying realization that God is missing.
